GenY have to pay attention to values and world views of the market-makers in the future such GenZ and Gen Alpha.

My Update

I have joined into a new activity from February. In the following, I will write about mainly “Docent Volunteer at the aquarium in Tokyo.”

At the end of March, I have retired from the management post in that volunteer team. As my final work, I have launched the new cloud system safely with a crazy scheduled project. This is my outcome of my best field which I could get a result that is few in number.

Still, the reason why I took the option to “retire” this time is both that I could not provide the value of being expected to the group, and the organization could not offer the value coinciding with my expectations.

Such the cloud system which I have introduced is making a certain effect in the perspective of “creating a member’s commit time” for the business efficiency in the context which I had stated in the last article. Probably it is also valid as a tool for “Organization Design to accept and use diverse commitments.” However, system and tools can live eventually with the world view of the users who uses them: “What mission do you want to achieve with making business efficiency?” Though I had done an activity to define the principles of our team 1 year ago, finally I could not sublimate it to feel smooth for members.

Introspection

The reason why is my poor capacity to accept diverse values. The “Capacity” here I have mentioned is a series of steady processes that is to understand the existence of diverse values, to clarify the gap between goals and a present situation, and to fill the gap with dialogue. Exactly, I did not have enough ability to be able to effectively proceed them with a consideration for the structure of the organization after understanding that I had not had enough time. Of course, a better charismatic leader than me who can breakthrough this situation is possibly sleeping in the group.

Today, I would like to think of the structural characteristics of my organization. The average age is relatively young among the organizations in the same category, because of the environmental factor why we are acting in the metropolis with well-organized public transport and enough population. In other words, a wide range of members are gathering up, not only the senior generation but also the young generation. It means that consideration for mindset of the difference between generations is more necessary.

As a simple fact, in the recent liaison conferences could not calling the participation of GenY and younger generations. In the past a year, majority of attendees were over the average age of the entire group.
Here, I do not mention “is this condition really suitable for the current group?” but we can lead the fact about the current structure that the young opinion will not be less reflected for our decision-making.

I am unsatisfied with this structure. I strongly recognized the importance of environmental education especially for the future children and youths through my activities in the volunteer team. For that reason, I have expected the situation that even among volunteers, young members can raise voices, and they could create activities which leads to their own learning.

What do we need to relate to youths

But now, a relationship between I and my group are becoming neither too close to nor too distant from each other. So, I do not have a strong wish to turn up the current situation, even though it is neither extremely good nor extremely bad.

As a general theory, it is always necessary to survive in society as either a person or an organization that to adapt to the changes of the surrounding and the environment. Any organization have to analyze their current situation, their goals and their action for the challenges.

In addition, if possible, I think we need to proactively incorporate the opinion from the generation who leads the organization in the future. But I have never tried to understand the thoughts of not only the next generation GenZ and Gen Alpha, but also GenY which is the same generation for me.

Then, It is my conclusion that “I do not need to get into the frame of activities such as the exhibition guide.” This is led from the assumption which I would like to act in a wide field called “Environmental Education.” So, I decided to join another group who are driving a business which are sincerely facing the values and world views of youths such as GenY, GenZ and Gen Alpha. I feel their “more wealthy sensitivity to change” during a few months when I have already participated in the new organization. It is not just a stereotype and some people may not sympathize, but I consider it is just a common tendency from my perspective.

Others may see me “the guy who has abandoned the volunteer group of exhibition guide.” However, I will continue to support also this unit in the future, and my origin of my future activity is definitely this exhibition guide activity. I chose it because I believe the outcome of my upcoming activity will lead the continuity of the original volunteer team. In the new fisical year, I would like to continue to consider “how can we make a sustainable coexistence?” with a balanced sense.
